The question usually arrives with a number attached. Someone has worked out that an hour with a gorilla family costs $1,500 in permit alone, before a single kilometre of road, and wants to know whether anyone honestly comes back saying it was worth it.
They do, in unusual numbers. That is the strongest fact in favour, and it has to be weighed against the reasons this trip goes badly for a specific kind of traveler.
What does the actual record show?

What reviewers praise is worth separating from what you expect. Very little concerns the gorillas, because everyone assumes that part will be good. The recurring theme is logistics: pre-dawn pickups arriving when promised, guides who explain the day before it happens, permits sorted at short notice. The case against, stated properly

Gorillas catch human respiratory infections, so trekking with a cold can get you turned away at Kinigi with the $1,500 spent and no obvious refund path. Then there is the hour itself: sixty minutes, seven meters, no flash. If the family is moving through thick vegetation, much of that time is watching shapes shift behind leaves rather than faces in a clearing. Anyone whose mental picture comes from a documentary shot over months should adjust it first.

The safety picture deserves plain treatment rather than reassurance. The US advisory for Rwanda has sat at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, since May 2026, with a Level 4 Do Not Travel zone within 10 km of the DRC border across Musanze, Rubavu and Rusizi districts. Volcanoes National Park is in Musanze District. Treks have continued running daily throughout, and the UK advises against non-essential travel only to parts of Rusizi.
